Food & Centennial
The community of Centennial loves to gather and share a meal, conversation and laughter just as Jesus gathered with his disciples at many meals. Since we remember how, at one special meal, Jesus broke bread, blessed it and shared it with his disciples, we believe that, even at our ordinary meals, Jesus is present.
Bunwich Sunday
Once a month after the Sunday service we have 'Bunwich Sunday'. The Fellowship Committee arranges all our favourite fixings (buns, mustard, horseradish, ham, roast beef, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles) so that we can make our own sandwiches. To complete the meal, the Fellowship Committee provides cake and ice cream. Sitting and eating together, we have an opportunity to meet other members of the community as friends and to develop closer relationships.
Centennial Picnic
Summer is never complete unless there is a picnic – hamburgs and hot dogs in the open air. Our community has been blessed for many years by the generosity of the Fisher family who invite us to their farm to enjoy outdoor country living – picnic tables, barbecue and fun games. The Fellowship Committee provides the main course and the members of the congregation provide pot-luck salads and dessert.
After the meal, Bean-Bag Baseball allows all members of the congregation – young and old, athletic and not-so-athletic, skilled and totally unskilled – to compete in a hilarious variation of baseball. Some people prefer to watch instead and be entertained by the players' antics. Every person who participates feels like a winner as the crowd roars out laughter and encouragement.
Christmas Lunch
Most families celebrate Christmas with a special meal and Centennial is no different. We gather after a Sunday worship in December for a Christmas Lunch since many of our members find it difficult to come out for evening events. The Fellowship Committee organises the cooking of hams, turkeys, mashed potatoes and gravy – and lots of it. The members of the congregation donate pot-luck salads and desserts. The tables are laden with festive foods.
After the meal, we sing Christmas songs and hymns. Finally, we close with a prayer and Silent Night as we remember the birth of our Saviour, the Light of the World.
