Centennial Social Group
submitted by Doris Weigel

Saturday September 21st, we had eighteen out bowling at Town and Country. High men singles were Ernie Weigel (214) and Tony Gvora (180). High ladies singles were Betty Walshaw (185) and Norene Thompson (168). A handful were out to cheer, all ending up at the Weigels' home for a social hour.

Friday October 25th we had a pot-luck dinner and fun night with about forty in attendance. We enjoyed great food and good fellowship.

The Christmas dinner is to be held on Sunday December 8th. Last year, about 130 came out. We are expecting another large turn-out this year.

We are planning a Queenswood Retreat on Saturday March 22nd 2003, but except for this event, the Wiegels and Farndens are ending their reign after the Christmas dinner. At one time, elections were held every two years to appoint new Social Group leaders. However, we took on this role in the early eighties and, except for a brief interlude, have been at it ever since. We feel that a change is long overdue, and hopefully, someone will come forward to take it on. You have been a great crowd to plan for. Thank you to everyone for your support and enthusiasm.>

News from Mary & John Braithwaite
Dunmurry Presbyterian Church, Northern Island (excerpt from an E-mail, submitted by Lyn Patton)

We thought summer here was never coming. June and early July were a disaster, especially for farmers -endless rain and cold; animals still inside eating precious fodder; and fields to wet to work on. Later in July was a bit better. Since August it has been very dry and warm. We were out of the country for most of July with our Church Team in Malawi. Fifteen of us of all ages went to some work at Livingstonia Hospital, a Church hospital with one doctor, who happens to come from here. It is part of an old mission station which includes school, technical college, church and hospital. We hadn't many building skills amongst us, but we took money with us for materials, etc. We painted rooms and corridors inside and laid a new concrete floor in a ward, and the young ones painted all the tin rooves. After the work, we travelled to the beautiful Lake Malawi, and then on to a game reserve to do the tourist bit. It was a great experience for us all, and we had a lot of fun along the way. Famine is serious in Malawi now, and we've been able to send some of the money given to us for that. The generosity of people who heard about us going was really humbling. We set out to raise £3,000 before going, but in the end were given over £10,000! So that was our holiday. Since then, Mary has been working all her free time at a counselling course which she has just finished, much to the relief of both of us. --
Our love & Good Wishes, Mary & John.
