Choir
Report Submitted by Toni Henderson and Charles
Dool
The choir has had a busy and productive
winter. Our Christmas services were generally well-attended, and many
favorable comments were received from the congregation and guests. We are
so fortunate to have our outstanding director, Ron McCormick, along with
music by Robert Neufeld on occasion, and the special support of Rev. Don
Isner.
Prairie Night was a huge success. The Police Choir was
wonderful and we were royally entertained with music and fun. The choir
also played a part in the entertainment and sang from our vantage point in
the gallery. Manitoba took the honors for most representation for the
first time, with Saskatchewan a close second
It's not the regular
or average Sunday services that form memories of singing in the choir, so
much as the SPECIAL occasions necessitating a little extra effort in
rehearsing the music. There was the short lull after the Christmas music,
but not for long, because we were looking at the Good Friday and Easter
Sunday services that would be coming up soon. Allison, our soprano soloist
on Easter Sunday, who sang "I know my Redeemer liveth" is another voice
major at the University. The two trumpet players are also music students
at the University.
In between, just before Easter, because of the
Iraqi war, we held a Prayer for Peace service that included some special
music. On that occasion Jamie Rose, tenor and Sheila Dool, alto joined to
sing the Purcell 'Bell Anthem' - " Rejoice in the Lord alway." Jamie also
sang an aria from Handel's Messiah.
On April 7/03, the choir
attended at the celebration of the life of Bruce Barr, who passed away on
April 1st and will be most sadly missed by the choir as well as the
congregation for his long and faithful service. Again we say "Thank you
Bruce". He was able to sing in the choir until three weeks before his
death. A remarkable contribution!
The annual potluck was held at
the home of Ruth and Jerry Gilliatt. From all reports, it was a great
get-together - lots of good food and fun.
You are aware of our
intentions to offer vocal scholarships for a Tenor and an Alto soloist.
Many have been very supportive of this project by contributing to the
fund, and for this we say "Thank You". When we first advertised, most who
would have been available had already accepted these scholarships from
other churches in Victoria; however, we do have some good news which we
feel we can pass on to you now. JAMIE ROSE, the tenor mentioned above, has
indicated he will be with us from June 1st to Dec. 31st. (He also said he
is hoping to find an alto to come along too.) With these extra vocal
resources, Ron will be happy to put them to good use. Bless him for
pushing and stretching our capabilities! We are thankful for the new help
coming into the choir.
